What does hygiene treatment involve?
1. Discussion
We begin your dental hygiene appointment with an informal chat. We check you are feeling well and generally healthy, and ask if you have any concerns about any aspect of your oral health.
2. Assessment
We examine your teeth and gums, looking for any signs of decay or early gum disease that will need attention. Most symptoms of gum disease are mild, so it can be easily overlooked.
3. Scaling
We make sure you are feeling comfortable and relaxed in the chair before we start your hygiene treatment. Using small sterile tools, we remove plaque and tartar build-ups from your teeth, especially the areas that are hard to reach at home.
4. Polishing
Once your teeth have been scaled, we give them a thorough polish to leave them looking and feeling bright, fresh and healthy.
5. Advice
To complete your hygienist appointment, we give you some personalised advice to help you look after your teeth and gums effectively at home. This includes brushing techniques, education and motivation to help avoid future issues.
Why are dental hygienist appointments important?
Dental hygienists are experts at protecting your teeth and gums from bacteria, decay and gum disease, giving you a healthy and complete smile to be proud of.
Gum disease is a common condition but can have serious implications if left untreated. The early stage, gingivitis, causes red and inflamed gums, but can be reversed with careful treatment. However, if it is allowed to progress to periodontitis, a more destructive stage that causes irreversible damage, it can only be controlled. Professional hygiene treatment aims to stop or manage any further damage being caused by the disease.
Book your appointmentWhat are the stages of gum disease?
Gingivitis
The early stage of gum disease, categorised by red and swollen gums that bleed easily when brushed. The symptoms of gingivitis are mild, so it often takes a hygienist to spot it and provide a professional teeth cleaning to stop the problem from worsening.
Early periodontitis
If gingivitis is left untreated, the inflammation can spread to below the gum line. This creates pockets as the teeth begin to pull away from the gums, trapping bacteria and plaque. Deep teeth cleaning procedures, including scaling and root surface debridement, can help.
Moderate periodontitis
At this stage of gum disease, the infection is more advanced and begins to destroy the supporting jawbone and connective tissues. Your teeth may feel loose or start to shift slightly as your gums recede. This damage can be controlled with extensive hygiene treatment.
Severe periodontitis
The most advanced and destructive form of gum disease, causing extreme sensitivity, painful chewing, very wobbly teeth and even tooth loss. Surgical hygiene treatment may be necessary to manage the infection and save your teeth.

Frequently asked questions
We recommend that most people visit a hygienist for professional teeth cleaning every six months in order to keep their oral health in the best condition. Our hygienists work closely with our dentists to provide a comprehensive service, and many of our patients book their dental check-ups and hygiene appointments at the same time. If you have a history of gum disease or other issues, we may suggest more frequent hygiene appointments.
